Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s pacifist drama “Nathan the Wise” is set in Jerusalem during the Crusades of the 12th century, which saw a direct encounter of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. This visually stunning period film with Werner Krauss in the leading role was shot on the grounds of Filmhaus Bavaria in Munich’s Ungererstrasse and on the banks of the Isar River. During production in 1922, the crew had to fend off fierce anti-Semitic attacks by the Nazis, who tried to destroy the negative and prevented the screening of the film in Munich until 1930. NATHAN was released to critical acclaim throughout the world: “A masterpiece of the highest rank that returns the invested millions many times over.” (“Berliner Börsen-Zeitung”) (Filmarchiv Austria)
