Agnes asks her boyfriend Konstantin a question: “What do you do on those long afternoons?” She already knows the answer. He is a writer and likes to spend his time brooding, even on a bright summer day. The setting is a bourgeois lakeside villa near Berlin. An unconventional family gets together for their leisure time. Irene, played by Angela Schanelec, is a theater actress. She has a new boyfriend, Max, who she introduces to her son Konstantin for the first time. Her ailing brother Alex mostly plays cards with little Mimmi.
NACHMITTAG is full of allusions to Angela Schanelec’s main artistic concerns: life as a play (the first scene is of a theater stage where Irene rehearses a scene with a dog), the hidden dramas of a Chekhovian group of people, the liminality between nature (animals, water) and culture (the building, swimsuits, computers).
Members of Angela Schanelec’s ensemble (or “family”) of actors are at its core: Konstantin is played by Jirka Zett, one of her discoveries, who would later resurface in ICH WAR ZUHAUSE, ABER. Miriam Horwitz is also in DER TRAUMHAFTE WEG. And not least, NACHMITTAG has become a monument to the late Fritz Schediwy, who, following his role as Alex, played only one more bigscreen role before his death in 2011. (Bert Rebhandl)
