This unusual film deals with a 68-year-old woman still working at a building site. Martha talks about her life, about bomb-shattered Berlin, the children, and her work as a «rubble woman» after the war a simple, courageous life. The attentive and respectful manner in which Böttcher lends Marthas story an ear is more powerful than any commentary. Until then, working-class heroes had neither looked, talked or acted like this. Böttcher goes a long way to do without commentary: there are no messages, statements or grand words.
