Austrian painter, mathematician, and gardener Edmund Kalb was an individualist all his life. Practically autarkic he lived on what he grew in his own garden Kalb produced a series of more than 1,000 self portraits before turning to abstraction. Subject to this film is Kalbs biography as well as his work, which has been partly destroyed by
ignorant contemporaries. Having been imprisoned by the Nazis he did not spend much time in freedom even after the War psychiatrists diagnosed him as a notorious troublemaker.
