The Hidden City

A city functions just like the inside of a body – something that remains unseen. Moreno decides to tap into a sort of structural reverse shot of Madrid, the great off-screen space that can only be discerned by peeping through a sewer and imagining what happens from there on in. All that can be guessed about the destiny of residual waste, the technical vicissitudes of electric circuits and cables, the extension of drinking water pipes, and the underworld nesting in the corridors of the underground achieves an aesthetic and philosophical prominence here that even leads one to speculate on how life can appear at the very heart of biological rot.
Combined with the rigor of sound and image, we also see the random findings derived from waiting around, such as the encounters with various species that feel comfortable in the entrails of the city and, at moments, some proletarian poetry – such as when Moreno stops to film lonely subway workers. A film that conjures up the inorganic life in the shadows. (Roger Koza)
