As we take a stroll through modern-day Guimarães (the founding city of Portugal), we ask ourselves: “What stories does it have to tell us?” The answers to this question come from the distinct voices of four filmmakers, with unique visions of cinema, together participating in one film. The multiple dimensions of history come from both fiction and reality: things are not what they first seem. In THE TAVERN MAN Aki Kaurismäki tells the story of a lonely bartender in Guimarães’ historical centre. in SWEET EXORCIST, Pedro costa takes a reflective dive into the colonial past using an elevator ride with a cape Verdean migrant and a Portuguese soldier. in the only documentary part, VIDROS PARTIDOS, the Basque Victor erice pays homage to Guimarães’ 150-year-old textile industry, now almost entirely outsourced to Asia. The final word is for the world’s oldest active filmmaker, Manoel De Oliveira, with the spicy satire o CONQUISTADOR, CONQUIS- TADO on wildly photographing tourists in Guimarães’ historic centre.
