Undoubtedly a highlight at the 2018 Berlinale was the screening of the newly reconstructed version of E. A. Dupont’s milestone work DAS ALTE GESETZ (“The Ancient Law”) made possible by the Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek in collaboration with numerous archives in Europe and the USA. In this film, Dupont tells the story of a rabbi’s son who decides to pursue a career in acting against his father’s wishes. Thanks to an Austrian archduchess, who likes the young man and supports his ambitions, he does, indeed, become a celebrated stage star. At a performance of “Don Carlos” at Vienna’s Burgtheater, father and son meet again … (Florian Widegger)
