The latest in the artist’s ongoing exploration of gender in and through Iranian media, Maryam Tafakory’s RAZEH-DEL continues to cite and manipulate fragments of narrative cinema while also incorporating archival material from the short-lived women’s newspaper Zan. A secondary narrative is deftly threaded through these fragments, a tale of two schoolgirls and their subversive cinematic proposal—the “synopsis for an impossible film”— that suggests both love and fire as potential means of liberation and agency.
