Endo Maiko’s visually striking, handsomely mounted science fiction film explores Dr. Masahiko Inami’s ongoing research in the field of information somatics, which is known as “Jizai-Body”. Inami proposes that the next step in human evolution—both physical and spiritual—can be achieved through human augmentation technology. We observe the realisation of this daring premise through children’s interactions with robotic prosthetics and VR devices. Can we reach an extended self via heightened physical sensation? Endo’s generous observational approach leaves space for the viewer to wonder. (Hyun Jin Cho)
