Hemel
Hammer Films shot QUATERMASS 2 (1957) in Danielle Dean’s hometown of Hemel Hempstead, a new city then still under construction, which served as the setting for an invasion of bodysnatchers threatening human existence with toxic black slime. In the sci-fi essay hybrid HEMEL, Dean plays both herself and a composite version of Professor Quatermass, bringing together real and imagined worlds born of postwar fears and ideals. The various dark matters she uncovers, including fumes, meteorites and that very same slime, equally relate to race, labour, and corporate greed. (Antoine Thirion)
