In EFFORTS OF NATURE, diferent sources and scales collide to emphasise the relativity of time. Anatomical images are set against planetary backdrops. Archival footage stutters, dissolves, crumbles and regenerates over looped musical samples. Scraps of self-help vocabulary echo the insistent pain expressed in a poem by Vietnam War veteran Yusef Komunyakaa. At once subtle, crafty and deeply emotional, Morgan Quaintance’s films explore conceptual, structural and formal ideas in a way that always feels like a mind-twisting performance. (Antoine Thirion)
