The First Bridge
For three decades, Pakalniņa has been a marginal but crucial presence in European cinema, crafting exquisite miniatures (usually short) which operate on the delicate cusp between documentary and experimental work. In THE FIRST BRIDGE, she makes the most of a fortuitous discovery, using long-discontinued monochrome 35mm Kodak 5231 film stock from 1997 to craft a portrait of the Krāslava Bridge near the Belarus border: cloudy skies, rippling waters, flora and fauna, the functional architectural elegance of one soaring structure.
