Derrière le mur
Behind the Wall
One of Ruiz's productions was developed for the renowned theater, dance and music festival in Avignon in 1987, together with the company Les Skis and based on a choreography by Joëlle Bouvier and Régis Obadia. Naturally, he did not create a classical dance film. Rather, Ruiz crafted, as he puts it, "concrete music" by mounting close-ups of the dancers' faces "dancing along" and thus creating the impression of a conversation via facial expressions. The film was shot in a Kasbah in Morocco, appearing as if it were set on another galaxy, and since the Japanese look of the costumes reminded Ruiz of “Star Trek”, the SF series served as a reference.
