Derrière le mur

Eine von Ruiz‘ Produktionen für das renommierte Theater-, Tanz- und Gesangsfestival in Avignon: 1987 dreht er gemeinsam mit der Kompanie Les Skis und nach einer Choreografie von Joëlle Bouvier and Régis Obadia keinen – logisch! – klassischen Tanzfilm. Vielmehr erschafft Ruiz, wie er es ausdrückt, „konkrete Musik“, indem er Close-ups der „mit-tanzenden“ Gesichter der Tänzer:innen montiert und solcherart den Eindruck einer Konversation via Mimik erschafft. Gedreht wurde in einer Kasbah in Marokko, wo es aussah wie auf einem anderen Stern, und da Ruiz sich vom japanischen Look der Kostüme an sie erinnert fühlte, diente die SF-Serie STAR TREK als Referenz. (Alexandra Seitz)

One of Ruiz's productions was developed for the renowned theater, dance and music festival in Avignon in 1987, together with the company Les Skis and based on a choreography by Joëlle Bouvier and Régis Obadia. Naturally, he did not create a classical dance film. Rather, Ruiz crafted, as he puts it, "concrete music" by mounting close-ups of the dancers' faces "dancing along" and thus creating the impression of a conversation via facial expressions. The film was shot in a Kasbah in Morocco, appearing as if it were set on another galaxy, and since the Japanese look of the costumes reminded Ruiz of “Star Trek”, the SF series served as a reference. (Alexandra Seitz)
