Der Angriff des Alfred Edel auf sich selbst

Jan Soldat’s latest compilation film focuses on the irrepressible personality of Alfred Edel, an axiomatic actor of the New German Cinema. In clips from films by Werner Herzog, Alexander Kluge, Hans- Jürgen Syberberg, Christoph Schlingensief and others, we get a taxonomy of Edel’s unique style of bombast. Soldat’s precise editing turns the man into his own peevish interlocutor; we see and hear him waxing philosophical, considering sexuality, eating and drinking and eventually facing death. Through it all, Edel remains a man of many words, a ranting, truculent visionary. (Michael Sicinski)
