Der unsichtbare Zoo

Über die Jahreszeiten hinweg werden das Leben der Tiere und die Arbeit der für diese Verantwortlichen im Zoo Zürich gezeigt, einer in Sachen Wissensvermittlung und Naturschutzengagement in Europa führenden Institution. Das eingehegte Tier, der freie(?) Mensch. Die Fremden und die Vertrauten. Wirklichkeit und Täuschung, vorgetäuschte Wirklichkeit. Eine Langzeitbeobachtung weniger von Tieren denn des verwaltenden Umgangs mit ihnen, Offenlegung einer Störung. Die gefinkelte Tonspur bietet im Jenseits des Bildes unter anderem die alltäglichen Produktionsgeräusche des Natur- Idylls. Antilopen, die Spaß haben im Schnee, bis sich der Graureiher in den Weg stellt. (Alexandra Seitz)

In recent decades, zoological parks have been subject to increased scrutiny, in part because of their direct connection to the legacy of colonialism. But it is impossible to simply eliminate zookeeping, since thousands of animals now rely on the care it provides for their very survival. In his latest film, Romuald Karmakar takes an in-depth look at the Zürich Zoo, from animal health and welfare to administration and fundraising. Avoiding overt commentary and preferring instead to allow events to unfold before an unobtrusive camera, DER UNSICHTBARE ZOO is an observational mosaic that works to make the many moving parts involved in sustaining this unique community visible. Of particular note is Karmakar’s expansive sound design, which envelops the spectator in the distinctive auditory environment of the institution. This effect is especially potent during an extended sequence in which a zebra is euthanised, its body removed and processed. This scene dramatises the ethical quandaries that are an unavoidable part of the zoo as a historical formation. Karmakar provides a close, intensive examination of an organisation working to adapt to new realities while striving to maintain its essential identity. (Michael Sicinski)
