TWST - Things We Said Today

Reporter: „Wenn es das Sicherheitsproblem nicht gäbe, was würden Sie sich in New York anschauen wollen?“ John Lennon: „Harlem.“ Was die Beatles im August 1965 anlässlich ihres Konzerts im Shea- Stadion nicht schafften, holt der rumänische Essay-Dokumentar- filmer Ujică nun nach. Er nimmt den Aufenthalt der Band zum Anlass, aus Found Footage ein Porträt der Stadt an einem heißen Wochenende zu erstellen: mit leicht hysterischen Teenagern, einem Besuch auf der Weltausstellung und der Reaktion Schwarzer Menschen in Harlem auf Rassenunruhen in L.A. Für einen Hauch von Spielfilm sorgen dabei die Figuren des Zeichners Yann Kebbi und eine autofiktionale Narration. (Lars Penning)

“Someday, when we’re dreaming / Deep in love, not a lot to say / Then we will remember / Things we said today.” Based on these lyrics by The Beatles from the song that gives the film its name, and taking their concert at Shea Stadium in New York in 1965 as a jumping off point, Andrei Ujică’s new masterpiece is so many things at once: an archive film, a reverie, an impossible dream, a visual poem, a political portrait and a journey into shared adolescent emotion that also locates the innocence of a country about to explode. Martin Luther King was still alive, the Vietnam War was not yet a bleeding wound in the heart of the country, and The Beatles were on their way, in the words of John Lennon, to becoming bigger than Jesus Christ. Born from a long-cherished desire on the part of Ujică and combining footage from the time with newly filmed material and detailed, poetic animation sequences, the film reconstructs and fictionalises the balmy August weekend when everything was said to be remembered.
