The Room Next Door

Mit 74 Jahren hat Almodóvar erstmals auf Englisch gedreht. Ohne dass sich der Sprachwechsel auf die für sein Werk charakteristische stilistische Eleganz oder die Faszination für vielschichtige Frauenfiguren ausgewirkt hätte. Mit den beiden exzellenten Hauptdarstellerinnen Moore und Swinton erzählt der Melodramen-Maestro nicht nur von einer tiefen Freundschaft zwischen zwei Frauen, dem Leben und dem Prozess selbstbestimmten Sterbens. Mit vergleichsweise stiller, gedimmter Dramatik wirft er zudem noch eine ganze Reihe weiterer existenzieller Fragen auf. Dafür hat der Spanier in Venedig den Goldenen Löwen erhalten. (Sascha Rettig)

Ingrid (Julianne Moore), a New York based writer, finds out that her old friend Martha (Tilda Swinton) is terminally ill. Having not seen her for years, Ingrid pays Martha a visit that will bring them closer than ever before. Determined to end her life via an illicitly obtained pill, Martha asks Ingrid to be with her during her last days. In his first feature in English, Almodóvar recalibrates his classic themes and motifs with a newly invigorated grace. 
His universe is still rich in colours, costumes, design items, cultural references and other symbolic objects of desire. Yet THE ROOM NEXT DOOR also exudes a profound stillness reminiscent of the minimalist melancholy of the Edward Hopper paintings featured in the film. With simplicity and transparency, Almodóvar opens the door to a plethora of stories. They are about mothers and daughters, friendship as a form of love and kinship, sexual pleasure as shelter and escape, ageing and memories and the burden they both become. 
In homage to the legendary women leads from Ingmar Bergman’s PERSONA, Swinton and Moore, two icons of cinema and beyond, reflect on the nature of performance and art as something that transcends both life and death: acts of constant, liberating transformation (Evgeny Gusyatinskiy)
