Zwischen uns Gott

Nach jahrelanger Distanz zu ihrer Familie fährt die Regisseurin in ihr Heimatdorf; mit einer Kamera, einem kleinen Filmteam, viel Zeit und offenen Ohren. In Gesprächen über deren intensiv gelebte Religiosität versucht sie, ihren Verwandten näherzukommen. Denn die methodistischen Großeltern erzogen ihre Kinder streng religiös; anders als Hirneises Mutter aber, die sich früh der christlichen Indoktrination widersetzte, blieben Tanten und Onkel extrem gläubig. Der Film zeigt eindrücklich die seelischen und sozialen Verheerungen, die ein fundamentalistisches Weltbild anrichtet, und wie sehr Religion Familien stärken, aber Menschen traumatisieren kann. Through its history, cinema has had varied relationships with God, ranging from early adaptations of the Bible and experiments in transcendental style to contemporary, anticlerical critiques of religious dogmas and attitudes. Yet few films try to deal with or even criticise religion without condescension or irony. Despite her upbringing in a strict Protestant environment, Rebecca Hirneise is not a believer herself. She has, however, still been affected by the painful gap between her own secular identity and that of her religious family, and here makes a fearless attempt to reconcile the disconnect, to question and truly understand their beliefs and values. The result is at once a personal, sensitive testimony of the director’s doubt and alienation and an anthropological study of the Christian faith in a present-day Europe largely considered atheist. Expressed in crisp compositions and direct conversations with her family members, Hirneise’s point of view is radically unbiased, something largely missing in contemporary (film) discourse about religion. ZWISCHEN UNS GOTT offers a striking lesson in how to conduct an open dialogue with the other, be it someone of completely opposing views or God himself. (Evgeny Gusyatinskiy)
