Tristan Forever

Seit drei Jahrzehnten reist der Pariser Arzt Loran Bonnardot immer wieder nach Tristan da Cunha, der abgelegensten bewohnten Insel der Welt. Aus dem Rückzugsort ist für ihn ein Sehnsuchtsort geworden, bis er sich entschließt dauerhaft zu bleiben. Die Insel entscheidet selbst über Zugehörigkeit. Während Loran auf die Abstimmung des Inselrats wartet, kollidieren sein Wunsch nach Abgeschiedenheit mit den Realitäten der Heimat in spe: die überschaubare Partnerinnenauswahl zum Beispiel, oder sein Unvermögen, mit dem Meer umzugehen. Begleitend verbinden sich Bilder aus seiner Biografie mit jenen der Geschichte der Insel zu einer poetisch realistischen Impression. (Otto Römisch)

No man is an island, but an island is an island in the case of Tristan da Cunha, one of the most remote archipelagos in the world. Belonging (strangely enough) to the British and located in the middle of the South Atlantic, this volcanic land is almost halfway between South Africa and Brazil and can only be reached by a six- to twelve-day boat ride. With a population of 230, can you imagine deciding to build a new life there? This is the adventure undertaken by Loran Bonnardot, a former Parisian doctor who is tired of mainland life. The film follows him in the year it takes for the community to decide if he can join them, a time during which the hardships of migration and life crises appear. Moving freely between documentary, fiction and the terrain of dreams, the main concern of TRISTAN FOREVER seems to be one that is currently omnipresent: where and how to live? And with whom to build one’s life? Loran and his quest uncover an entire world on this island, with a history of its own and a landscape that creates a constantly low level tension around the idea of starting over.
