(Gerhard Midding)

Few filmmakers are as devoted to the poetic possibilities of 3D technology as Wim Wenders. Made almost two decades after his first venture into stereoscopic imagery, FROM INSIDE OUT – THE ARCHITECTURE OF PETER ZUMTHOR finds the filmmaker displaying the same technical prowess that characterises much of his later non-fiction work. It is arguably through this sense of belonging to a craft that he finds a kinship with Peter Zumthor, the Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architect at the centre of the film. From alpine houses and rural chapels to sombre memorial sites and lavish art museums, Zumthor has completed few buildings, yet the ones he has are highly refined in their approach to functionality, materiality and sensibility. Skilfully moulding the architect’s vision of light, shadow, texture and volume into a dynamic film language, Wenders leads the viewer into an immersive experience of each site through his roaming camera. Zumthor himself appears in only a handful of interviews and remains an unassuming documentary subject, allowing his designs to speak for themselves, often through the experiences of their present or imaginary users, makers and dwellers, whom Wenders elegantly captures in quasi-fictional fragments.
