Am Rande des NY-Filmfestivals ließ sich Jafar Panahi 2025 von seinem brasilianischen Kollegen Kleber Mendonça in einen hybriden Kurzfilm verstri cken. Zu Beginn eine stumme Komödie mit Panahi Fans, die um Selfies bitten; anschließend schickt uns die Stimme des Filmemachers auf Erinnerungstour durch die Kinolandschaft des Iran. Während die Ein drücke aus New York in subtilen Lichtwechseln mit Straßenbildern aus TAXI (2015) und Sounds aus THE MIRROR (1997) verschmelzen, sitzt im Fond des Wagens der heutige Panahi – und am Steuer, ver doppelt, sein zweites Ich. Jafar Panahi smokes a cigarette in New York City, while we hear his voice telling us about his early relationship with cinema in South Tehran. He takes a cab and looks at the movie theatres along the street, conjuring up sounds from his film AYNEH (1997) and images from TAXI (2015). A lifelong cinephile, Kleber Mendonça Filho is a firm believer in the sacredness of cinema. Here, he finds a kindred spirit. Together, they invent a place where Tehran and New York can coexist in a shot/reverse shot. Film can be a city without borders. (Victor Guimarães)
