Wie der Held des Films im Irgendwo der marokkanischen Sahara Nomade wurde, ist unbekannt; doch SCYLOS schafft es betörend, uns in die mäandrische Suche nach der Antwort zu verstricken – alldieweil ein weiterer Erzählstrang Laboranalysten bei der Erforschung der Erdgeschichte folgt. Eine Gegenüberstellung der Dimensionen von Mensch und Erde, aber auch von Poesie und Logik, während sich im Zusehergehirn Sedimente zwischen den Weiten der Wüste und der Identitätssuche eines Einzelnen ablagern. (Roman Scheiber)

Some films fit Jean Cocteau’s description of messages scrawled on a mirror: “some rare lyric mood whose secret none might share”. SCYLOS multiplies cryptic voice-overs, inter-titles, hints of stories, invocations of historic change and individual destiny. Gradually, a pattern emerges: glimpses of life and culture in the Moroccan Sahara alternate with the archaeological rock fragments analysed in a German lab. Both strands evoke spectres of extinction, loss, genetic memory. As in the deserts of Antonioni’s THE PASSENGER, rational investigation confronts universal oblivion. Only traces remain.
