Quién lo impide

„Nicht vergessen: Wir sind nur fiktive Charaktere“, heißt es nach dem ersten Drittel auf einem Zwischentitel. Womit der Regisseur uns zugleich daran erinnert, wie sehr es ihm gefällt, sich im Grenzbereich zwischen Spiel- und Dokumentarfilm zu tummeln. Er bleibt mit der Kamera ganz nah an seinen brillanten jungen Schauspieler*innen – Erwachsene tauchen nur am Rande oder in der Ferne auf –, die mit so großer Natürlichkeit agieren, dass man irgendwann überzeugt ist, es handle sich um eine Langzeitdokumentation. Apropos Dauer: Niemand sollte sich von der Länge dieses Films erschrecken lassen, QUIÉN LO IMPIDE lässt keine Langeweile aufkommen. (Ferdinand Keller)

The title of the film is a question without a question mark, a declaration of intent, a challenge. Over the course of five years, Jonás Trueba made a film with a group of teenagers without anyone stopping him. A film without a script, glued to the lives of those growing up in front of, alongside, and behind the camera and for whom he never wrote a single line of dialogue.
Inspired by a song by Rafael Berrio (“Si tienes quince años y pretendes escapar con eso basta y sobra para hacerlo”/“If you’re fifteen and planning your escape, that’s enough to do it”), Trueba accompanied them, rose to the task, and shot a film with them that is full of dreams, but not innocent, confident but not naïve; starry-eyed, with a sense that everything is possible.
Overflowing with energy, as only teenagers can be, overflowing with ideas and forms (documentary, fiction, testimony, interview?), QUIEN LO IMPIDE is a generational portrait in the here and now, but also a collective question, for viewers, for parents, for young people and adults: who are we, who do we want to be, as people and as a society? “Quién lo impide/nadie lo impide”: who’s going to stop it/nobody’s going to stop it.
