Wer nicht weiß, ob Thunberg oder Trump recht hat, möge sich diese bestechende Kamerafahrt zu Gemüte führen. Auf der Insel Funafuti, Teil des Tuvalu-Archipels, zeitigt das Klima seit einigen Jahren ein bedrohliches Phänomen: Die Erwärmung des Meeres führt zu regelmäßigen Überflutungen der Insel, im Wechsel mit ebenso regelmäßigen Dürreperioden. Durch einen raffinierten formalen Kniff macht der Film deutlich, was das für die Bewohner der Insel und für ihre Zukunft bedeutet. Zweifelt überhaupt noch wer, ob Thunberg oder Trump recht hat? Funafuti, capital of the island state of Tuvalu: small houses, warehouses, and flourishing nature appear in front of an ever-gliding camera; most of the places seem to be being slowly covered by water. The long line marked out by the dolly shot resembles the precarious geography of this atoll and symbolizes an irreversible trend at the same time: climate change. So what we see is a country in abeyance. People in waiting positions, slowed down in ghostly fashion, caught between the past and the absence of a future. In a surprising move, this state is transcended by alternating images of the soggy present and a lost normality. (Gunnar Landsgesell)
