(Robert Weixlbaumer)

In Anwesenheit von Lilith Stangenberg und Stephan Holl.

German writer, philosopher, and filmmaker Alexander Kluge has had an immensely rich career as both an intellectual and an artist that spans a full sixty years. At times called "the German Godard", Kluge has lectured in poetics and collaborated with renowned artists such as Gerhard Richter. It’s particularly exciting to see Kluge approach film with continued freshness and experimental zest, this time partnering up with Filipino poet, singer, and prolific film director Khavn de la Cruz – a truly interdisciplinary collaboration. In Kluge and Khavn's ORPHEA, a young rock singer called Orphea Jesus (Lilith Stangenberg) traverses time, cultures, and the globe in search of her beloved. In this quest for the essence of immortality, gender roles are reversed: the bold, albeit waifish Orphea as seeker and defender and Ian Madrigal (seen in a cameo in Lars von Trier's MELANCHOLIA) as Euridikio, a male incarnation of the ancient Eurydice, trapped in the underworld, the entrance to which is now in Manila. Culled from a collage of highly stylized vignettes and with a conceptual fluidity of video art, ORPHEA plays out at times like a Brechtian operetta adapted for the screen and at others like an installation. One thing is certain: This freewheeling, epic love story is a rambunctious ride. (Ela Bittencourt)
