Ein Paar mittleren Alters – verkörpert vom Schweizer Segler Bernard Stamm und der französischen Schauspielerin Clotilde Courau – nimmt an einer Segelregatta auf dem Genfer See teil. Sportlicher Wettbewerb spielt in LE LAC allerdings keine Rolle, denn was Ex- Godard-Kollaborateur Aragno in seinem ersten langen Spielfilm inszeniert, ist eine Ode an eine gesteigerte Wahrnehmung der Natur: Überwasser und Unterwasser, bei Sonnenschein oder Gewitterfront. Der Ton ist dabei so wichtig wie das Bild: das Schlagen der Segel im Wind, die Stille der klaren Sternennacht, das nervtötende Motorrattern eines Ausflugsdampfers. Und immer ist Raum zum Durchatmen. Fabrice Aragno’s debut feature takes the spectator on a highly sensorial and at times almost transcendent journey. With a loose, anecdotal plotline—a couple take part in a sailboat competition on Lake Geneva—the director builds a film that evokes landscape painting and various branches of cinema, but is truly unique in its conception and vibration. LE LAC contains impressive vistas of skies, delicate water reflections at night, carefully chosen frames and angles, compositions that underscore the distinct definitions of foreground and background and a keen ability to capture the singularity of light tonalities and hues of colour. A close collaborator of Jean-Luc Godard since 2002, Aragno is accustomed to putting technology at the service of experimentation. In LE LAC, we find sudden changes in image format, optical aberrations and a recurrent exploration of speed and stillness, of sound and silence. Passages of extreme serenity and calm are followed by others pulsing with unspoken tension and mystery. For all its majestic beauty and awe, LE LAC also conveys an intensely aching feeling—a sort of longing and need that goes hand in hand with the healing properties of nature. (Cristina Álvarez López)
