Nach seinem Rockmusical JEANNETTE setzt sich der unberechenbare Bruno Dumont weiter mit dem französischen Nationalmythos Jeanne d’Arc auseinander. Basierend auf Charles Péguys Theaterstück von 1897 und in Anlehnung an die großen Kinofilme von Dreyer und Bresson entsteht eine in sich ruhende Arbeit, die sich vor allem mit dem Gerichtsprozess um die junge Widerständige befasst. Es ist ein politischer Film über Sprache, in dem leere Worte die Welt beherrschen. Man hört getragene Balladen des Chansonniers Christophe, sieht die entblößte Absurdität von Macht und blickt in die Augen eines Mädchens, das sich nicht einschüchtern lässt. (Patrick Holzapfel)

No longer a musical like JEANNETTE: THE CHILDHOOD OF JOAN OF ARC, JEANNE is a combination of different genres that tells the story of the heroine’s teenage years, an adolescence interrupted by the accusations of heresy that paved the way to the stake. France’s most idiosyncratic filmmaker includes some popular songs to accompany the plot, invents a musical choreography in which horses and riders seem like incarnations of Baryshnikov, and stages the whole trial inside a cathedral (an indirect lesson on how to film architecture), including various outstanding and strangely comic moments.
The story itself is well known. It’s 1492, the devastating Hundred Years’ War is in full swing, and the days of this feminine symbol of battle are numbered. Yet this film will go down in history for its closing shot. How could it be that neither Dreyer, nor Bresson realized that the young warrior’s burning flesh should be shot from a distance and never from the joyful point of view of the executioner and the perverse purifiers of souls?
