A Human Certainty

Das Ende einer Beziehung, in Schriftzügen auf Bilder vom Ort der Trennung gesetzt, durchzieht als roter Faden den Filmessay über die einzige Gewissheit des Menschen, den Tod. Schmerz über den Verlust verwebt sich in einem assoziativen Netz mit den grausamen Tatortfotos Weegees, mit Märtyrergeschichten und Friedhöfen, mit Erinnerungen an die Großmutter und ihren Dialog mit den Gestorbenen. Die Meditation über die Vergänglichkeit endet tröstlich: Dem Tod einer Liebe folgt Neues, „things are going to change. I can feel it“, lesen wir. (Barbara Kronsfoth)

The design of the credits suggest a parody of soap opera, but Morgan Quaintance’s recounting of a lost love is serious business. As in SURVIVING YOU, ALWAYS, sound and image are split, and a narration inscribed in titles rubs against archival songs (The Turbans) and speeches (“positive thinking” guru Norman Vincent Peale) on the audio track. Here, however, the essayistic musing wanders even further, to the autoimmune condition of St. Lidwina, the tabloid photographer Weegee, and a spiritualist grandmother. What connects it all is the memorial specter of death and loss – definitely a human certainty. (Adrian Martin)
