Gigi la legge

Der Film begleitet den altgedienten Dorfpolizisten Gigi durch seinen Alltag, in dem scheinbar nichts passiert. Probleme mit dem Vorgesetzten, ein Flirt per Funk mit der neuen Polizeianwärterin, ein Jugendlicher und sein frisiertes Motorino. Doch schon wieder liegt eine Leiche in der Nähe des Bahnübergangs, und Gigi recherchiert ohne Auftrag diese Serie unerklärlicher Selbstmorde nach. Sein Garten, mit Bäumen, die urwaldgleich in den Himmel wachsen, bietet ihm Ausgleich zur Monotonie der Landstraße. Ein schlicht erzähltes skurriles Märchen über einen liebenswürdigen Polizisten, wie man sich ihn als Kind vorgestellt hat: dein Freund und Helfer. (Maria Marchetta)

“I love life and I love love/I am a pirate, I am a gentleman/More self-esteem than modesty”, goes the Italian version of the Julio Iglesias song that plays in Gigi’s car on one of his many routine police rounds through the small Venetian towns where he works. His “job” consists of greeting neighbors as he passes by, striking up a conversation with some of them, following the radio directions regarding conflict situations (which never actually amount to much) and, more than anything, flirting with Paola, the girl who speaks to him through the intercom. But one day he finds a corpse on the train tracks and, slowly, his confident, roguish persona starts to crumble.
Working with non-actors (Gigi is his uncle) and mixing documentary and fiction, Comodin beautifully explores not only the main character’s realization of the hidden pain behind his nonchalant attitude, but also how life in these quiet little places is always more complex than it seems. But this is not a story that simply tries to reveal the hidden darkness of life in a small town. In its own unhurried and peaceful way, it’s also a celebration of the possibility to transcend pain and still be able, as the song says, “to love life”. (Diego Lerer)
