Film socialisme

Jean-Luc Godard hat in seinem Werk eine Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit erreicht, die ihresgleichen im Kino nicht kennt. In FILM SOCIALISME mischt Godard, der nun nicht mehr ist, die Genres und Texte, Musiken und Bilder, die Orte und Figuren auf so spielerische und zugleich analytische Weise, dass die einmalige Betrachtung nur eine Ahnung von alldem vermittelt. Zuerst auf einem Kreuzfahrtschiff im Mittelmeer und dann in einer Garage und Tankstelle irgendwo abseits der großen Welt lässt der alte Magier vom Genfer See eine Bühne dieser Welt entstehen, die gar nicht groß ist, sondern verwirrend, traurig, eigensinnig und begleitet von einem wunderbaren filmischen Lächeln. The first section of FILM SOCIALISME, or “movement”, takes place on a cruise ship touring the Mediterranean; the second follows a French family who run a garage and are hounded by a camera crew after one of its members announces a candidacy for the local elections; and the third section is a coda collage which ranks as some of the most inspired passages in Godard’s late period, perhaps of his entire career.
