(Bert Rebhandl)

Nearly a decade after his last film BEO-NING (2018), Korean master Lee Chang-dong returns with a sprawling epic about the shapes that love, friendship and intimacy can take amid the forces of economic precarity and exploitation—the kind encountered on a factory floor as well as in front of the camera. Months after the brutal crackdown of their union’s strike, a struggling, working-class couple—the genial Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon) and her surly husband Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu)—encounter Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), a documentary filmmaker who wants them to be the primary subjects of her new project. To gain access to the most intimate details of their stories, Ye-ji pulls her ultra-wealthy husband Sang-woo (Zo In-sung) into double dates and gatherings with the humble couple and their young son, culminating in a group getaway to Sang-woo’s childhood chateau where the two families test the limits of their bond. Reuniting with some of the most formidable actors from his previous works, Lee stages an increasingly uneasy pas de deux in which class consciousness seeps into the most intimate moments, revealing—with the director’s characteristic emotional charge—the very terms in which people can imagine happiness in their own lives. (Beatrice Loayza)
