Forever...Forever

Ein Experiment in Zeit, Licht und Raum: 22 Monate, Tag und Nacht durch alle Jahreszeiten derselbe und doch stets andere Blick auf den Stausee Ottenstein im niederösterreichischen Waldviertel, dargereicht vom 70mm-Wizard und Filmbildkünstler Johann Lurf. Mit den Aufnahmen seiner selbst konstruierten Kamera, die autonom Lichtmessung, Stand- und Bewegtbild kombiniert, begleitet vom stetig fließenden sub-sonischen Soundteppich von Jung An Tagen wird er das Gartenbaukino kosmisch bewegt in zusehends rasantem Tempo berauschend zum Glühen bringen. Und definiert wie nebenbei, was dieses fragile Geschöpf, das sich Kino nennt, im Innersten zusammenhält. (Bernd Brehmer)

Day breaks over the Ottenstein reservoir. In accelerated motion, light floods the landscape, colours racing over the bridge and the surrounding trees and sky—until night falls and darkness arrives. From the same fixed position, the cycle repeats for 22 months, yet the changing light renders each day singular, a unique constellation of weather and season. Jung An Tagen’s trance-inducing score follows the same impulse, translating planetary motion into pulses of rhythm and stretches of near silence. Its austere precision also underlines the film’s firmly rooted structural lineage, keeping us at a measured distance from the straightforwardly figurative. Night follows day across countless variations, hurtling toward unbroken luminosity as the time-lapse shots speed up. FOREVER…FOREVER was shot on a specially constructed camera that shoots custom 65mm stock with exposure times of up to 24 hours—by the final sequence, 423 days have been condensed into 17 seconds. Yet for all its technical complexity, the film returns us to something elemental: the Earth’s rotation, a rhythm that belongs to every living being, and one too often overlooked in our time; rediscovering it together, in the auditorium, in the dark, also carries a political dimension.
