El Chinero, un cerro fantasma

Im nordwestlichen Mexiko liegt in einer wüstenartigen Landschaft der Hügel El Chinero. Einer Legende zufolge sind hier nach der Mexikanischen Revolution Anfang der 1910er Jahre siebzig Menschen aus Asien zu Tode gekommen. „Vielleicht einmal, vielleicht mehrfach“, heißt es rätselhaft in einem Insert zu Beginn. Und warum überhaupt? Khoshnoudi geht dem titelgebenden Hügel-Fantasma mit filmischen Mitteln nach: Material aus einer Bolex, entwickelt von Hand, lässt eine „landscape marked by violence“ lebendig werden: Bilder, um nicht zu vergessen. El Chinero is an isolated hill in the Mexicali region of Mexico, not far from the US border. This site bore witness to a massacre at the dawn of the 20th century, when around 70 Asian exiles were made to disappear while trying to cross the border. In a land controlled by necropolitics that still devours many bodies, Khoshnoudi takes us on an investigation that examines the memory of places and its crucial role in the narration of a nation’s history. Shot in fragile black and white that shifts the focus from the grandeur of the landscape onto smaller traces, EL CHINERO stands as a warning to the political necessity of resisting oblivion.
