Robert Altmans Filme der 1970er Jahre gaben dem Publikum gern zu Beginn ein konventionelles Element zum Anhalten, nur um es im Verlauf der Narration in die Irre zu führen. An jene Devise kann man sich auch im Fach des gehobenen Konzeptfilms halten, wie Segal mal in einem Interview meinte und nun mit seiner neuen Arbeit beweist. Es geht um Rhythmus, Variation und Wahrnehmung von Zeit, so viel ist klar, doch zwischen den Polen Bildinformationssättigung und Kargheit des Ausdrucks besteht jede Menge individueller Interpretationsspielraum. This enigmatic work by Alan Segal carries a haunting resonance with our current pandemic situation. Mainly comprised of images without people, it takes us through a spare, ritualistic cycle: coins dropped in a tray of water, candles set within sculptural constructions, objects placed under a table leg. A discontinuous tale is narrated only in printed subtitles, about a clock that once adorned a public building, effectively penalized for telling the correct time.
