The Demands of Ordinary Devotion

Eine Münze wird ein ums andere Mal geworfen. Darum umher gruppieren sich Aufnahmen oft kreisförmiger Bewegungen sowie Bilder von Rundungen. Das Drehen des Hebels an der Kamera korrespondiert dem Streicheln des schwangeren Bauchs, der Tonklumpen rotiert auf der Töpferscheibe, das Baby saugt an der Brust. Filmwechseln trifft auf Windelnwechseln. Die Arbeit an der Kunst. Die Arbeit am Leben. Und wieder schnalzt die Münze in die Luft. Künstlerin oder Mutter? Beruf oder Kind? Und die Frage, warum sich dies hartnäckig als Alternative präsentiert? (Alexandra Seitz)

In many languages you don’t “shoot” a film, you “turn” it (for example, tourner, girare or drehen). Eva Giolo’s latest short, a 16mm poem, explores the beauty of this turning. In her associative collage of similarities, she combines circular shapes and movements connecting a mother and her baby, a camera, flowers, smiles, fruits and handicraft. Her turning also becomes a movement towards the gestures she films as she shows the loving and sensual intimacy of the work of care. It’s a bewitching celebration of life and cinema hand in hand.
