Saugen Kapitalisten tatsächlich Blut? Das fragen sich im (etwas verfremdeten) Jahr 1928 nicht nur die Teilnehmer eines Marx-Lesekreises in den Ostseedünen. Und was haben damit eine protestantische Fabrikantentochter mit dezenter Neigung zur Moderne, ihr persönlicher Assistent mit Biss-Spuren sowie ein falscher russischer Baron zu tun? Letzterer sich als ein auf Stalins Geheiß aus Eisensteins Revolutionsfilm OKTOBER herausgeschnittener Ex(il)-Schauspieler herausstellt. Radlmaier macht aus diesen Zutaten eine ironisch-distanzierte Vampirkomödie, die Theoriediskurs, wörtlich genommene Marx’sche Metaphern und cinephiles Amüsement spielerisch zusammenfügt. Having delighted and provoked Viennale audiences with such distinctive blends of politics, poetry, and dry comedy as EIN PROLETARISCHES WINTERMÄRCHEN (2014), German writer-director Julian Radlmaier returns with another of his idiosyncratic dissections of European socialist intellectualism. Its English title carrying the neatly descriptive subtitle “a Marxist vampire comedy”, this crisply-shot period piece unfolds in 1928 at an upscale resort on the Baltic coast. Here spoiled heiress Octavia Flambow-Jansen is holidaying with her passionately devoted servant, when penniless Russian aristocrat Baron Koberski – presenting himself as an exile from the new USSR – shows up out of the blue. Complications and revelations rapidly (and sometimes farcically) ensue, including an unexpected flashback cameo from none other than epoch-making Soviet auteur Sergei Eisenstein. Sleepy-eyed Koberidze, himself a writer-director of considerable talent (RAS VKHEDAVT, RODESAC CAS VUKUREBT), displays quietly impressive the spian skills as the enigmatic “Baron” in this deftly elegant, deceptively acute film whose every element is weighed up and calculated for maximum humorous and theoretical effect.
