(Barbara Schweizerhof)

Following the enormous success of AQUARIUS (2016), celebrated Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho, co-directing with his longtime production designer Juliano Dornelles for the first time, brings us his new film, Cannes Jury Prize winner BACURAU.
The film is set in the near future, in the small village of Bacurau. The citizens mourn the loss of its matriarch Carmelita, who lived to be 94 years old. Days later, its inhabitants, a diverse group of people who share a sense of pride, notice that their community has vanished from most maps. Something is already not quite right in this backcountry Brazilian town when a group of mysterious foreigners motivated by political deals suddenly appear to disturb the peace and threaten the villagers’ lives with violence, starting an angry game of solidary defense to survive in this community – including a memorable performance by Sonia Braga.
The filmmaking duo deliver a surprising power-to-the-people fable built on tension. In a vibrant combination of references that includes names such as John Carpenter and George Miller, the film gives the audience an explosive thriller that reflects on the political scenario in Brazil today in a prophetic and critical way.
