Ein Film aus der Kälte über die Suche nach menschlicher Wärme. Die riesige Wohnung in St. Petersburg ist billig zu haben, denn ihr Eigentümer ist im Preis inbegriffen. Der alte Vadim will nicht ausziehen, nur die junge Georgierin Medea lässt er bei sich wohnen, die fürchten muss, von einer der Polizeipatrouillen aufgegriffen zu werden. So wie ihr Freund Lado, der ihr in die gesichtslose Winterstadt gefolgt ist. Inspiriert von der brutalen Deportation Tausender ihrer Landsleute im Jahr 2006, erzählt Rusudan Glurjidze mit poetischer Empfindsamkeit über den Verlust, die Hoffnung und die versteckten Möglichkeiten eines antiken Kleiderschranks. An old Russian man named Vadim sells his apartment in Saint Petersburg at a low price on the condition that the new owner share the place with him until he dies. Medea, a Georgian émigré working in the furniture restoration business, is fascinated by Vadim’s home— a sort of museum replete with antique objects—and decides to buy it. Lado, Medea’s boyfriend, smuggles antique furniture between both countries, dodging the police. In ANTIKVARIATI, the destinies of these three characters intertwine in unexpected ways. In her second feature, Georgian filmmaker Rusudan Glurjidze constructs a powerful fiction that is nurtured by reality: the film was inspired by the massive illegal deportations of Georgians ordered by Vladimir Putin in 2006—and, as the action unfolds, this historical event becomes a key element in the plot’s resolution. Mixing drama, intrigue, social critique and off-beat comedy, and incorporating a range of formal strategies, ANTIKVARIATI explores the clash between nations, generations and attitudes toward life via its appealingly flawed characters. The result works both at a small-scale intimate level and as a sharp parable of the political and social tensions between Russia and Georgia. (Cristina Álvarez López)
