Dream Team

Das Dream Team von Interpol, hier in Mexiko bei der Arbeit, hat wenig mit herkömmlichen Ermittlungsmethoden am Hut. Umso mehr dafür mit der Fiebertraumstringenz seines Regie-Duos, das sich nicht von kleingeistiger Erzähllogik kreativ beschränken lässt. Sondern exzessiv seiner Leidenschaft für Minikleider, Korallen-wissenschaft, Erotikthriller, Technikkram, Soap-Dialoge, Wasser-basketball, Serienkapitel, Synthesizer-Musik und andere sensorische Errungenschaften vor der Jahrhundertwende frönt. Klar ist am Ende nur: Es geht ums Unbewusste der organischen Welt – irgendwie. Und der Fall bleibt natürlich ungelöst. Ein Schalk, wer Drogeninduktion vermutet. (Roman Scheiber)  

The coral smuggling world is experiencing a wave of shocking marine murders. The series of mysterious deaths might seem like an impossible riddle to solve, but not for our heroes—a dynamic duo of Interpol agents. In their 3rd feature film, directorial team Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn take us back to the era of ‘90s series, when TV was churning out reams of largely forgettable cable content before the Internet exploded. Everything in DREAM TEAM reminds us of lazy afternoons in front of the television: the different episodes complete with titles and credits, the protagonists’ wardrobes, the plots, the saturated sunsets and sandy beaches. The sense of mockery never leaves us and never tires us. But soon it becomes clear that nostalgia is not the main ingredient here. The surreal wit present in every dialogue, the playful incoherence of the plot and the sense of cinematic beauty above all turn DREAM TEAM into a unique experiment in pop cultural appropriation, where banality and exploitation—the very ontological underpinnings of TV language—are subverted into surrealist visual epiphanies. Never content with mere humour, Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn continue to forge a link between visual experimentation and the collective imaginary. (Rebecca De Pas)
