L' Amour fou

Die komplex-verschachtelte Geschichte eines jungen Paares: Sébastien ist Theaterregisseur, seine Frau Claire Schauspielerin. Claire löst sich vom Ensemble, verliert sich im Ennui und wird eifersüchtig auf die Arbeit von Sébastien. Zunehmende Verzweiflung und eskalierende Hassliebe münden in ein Schauspiel der (Selbst)Zerstörung. Buchstäblich, denn die Auseinandersetzungen werden immer wieder kommentierend unterbrochen: Mit Ausschnitten aus einer Probe von Racines „Andromaque“ – über die wiederum ein Team des französischen Fernsehens einen Bericht dreht. Ein so intimes wie intellektuelles Journal über die schillernden Beziehungen zwischen Kunst und Leben. (Nada Torucar)

A director called Sébastien conducts rehearsals for a Racine play, while his marriage to an actress named Claire disintegrates back home. The rehearsals are filmed by a television crew, with the back and forth between the two cameras just one element of what makes the film akin to a pendulum. L’AMOUR FOU is entirely built on dualities: Claire and Sébastien, mise-en-scène and improvisation, the naked stage and a crowded apartment, long shots and abrupt cuts, 16mm and 35mm. This new restoration maintains all the roughness of the film while accentuating its materiality: the diferences in contrast and grain between the 16mm and the 35mm footage become key to its poetics, while the oscillating nature of the sound (mics on stage, tape recorders, whispered words, the Paris roar) creates new layers. A recurring image: someone looks into a mirror, and we see both face and reflection. What’s important is not the reality behind the fiction, but the vivacious truth of a 4-hour game of masks of flesh and bone. While the TV director interviews each actor to get the backstage scoop, Claire and Sébastien joyfully tear down the apartment and build their own fiction of wallpaper and ink. But the descent into real madness is always one tone away. (Victor Guimarães)
