Monography: Fever Dreams of Vasko Pregelj

Spaces free from ideological control, where many filmmakers from the 1960s onwards freely explored the same radical possibilities of experimental film as their international contemporaries – while being largely ignored by critics, historiography, and state archives. This was the scene of amateur film clubs in socialist Yugoslavia, which Matevž Jerman and Jurij Meden bring back to light in their documentary ALI JE BILO KAJ AVANTGARDNEGA?

It is within this context that the programme dedicated to Vasko Pregelj (1948–1985) is presented. An exceptionally versatile figure in Slovenian-Yugoslav cinema, Pregelj worked as a director, painter, sculptor, photographer, and theorist. For twenty-five years, his films were considered lost; they rank among the particularly rare and extraordinary works of this movement – offering a rare opportunity to discover an artist who, at just sixteen, began combining painting, sculpture, sound, and image into a single artistic gesture.
