When Werner Schroeter started shooting Weiße Reise (White Journey) in the spring of 1978, it seemed to mark the realization of a long-planned project: a film with the working title of «Alle Matrosen der Welt» («All Sailors of the World»), which was supposed to be filmed in the most important harbors of the world and recount the adventures and love lives of two sailors. It seemed, however, that the project would never be realized until the producer Eric Franck provided Schroeter with the most modest means. Thus, Weiße Reise has become an adventure film, home movie and Brechtian drama at the same time, a film finished in minor key by a director working in major key. A film, in which human feelings collide and intermingle, in which you don't know whether to laugh or cry anymore, in which the unreal dares to declare itself as such. And isn't that the perfect way to achieve a certain truth in the staging? (Gérard Courant)
