Hu Jian, Chen Li and Tian Bo: three kids. They tear off gold earrings from passers-by on a street corner in Chengdu to sustain their heroin addiction. The law can do nothing because they are underage. One earring provides them with their daily dose. The dealer forces them to steal, supplies them with heroin and a room to sleep in. In case they are arrested, he bails them out with 350 Yuan. That's why these kids are called Three-Five People. To protect themselves against being arrested they have to give the other earring to the local «er pai», a sort of police informer. The social phenomenon of underaged kids on heroin has come along with the social changes in China.
