During the 70s and 80s, the Berlin rock band Ton Steine Scherben supplied the soundtrack for the revolts of students, squatters and environmentalists alike. In the beginning, the band, headed by Rio Reiser, were openly behind «any and all activists supporting the class struggle». Later on, however, the political left began to make too many demands on the group and they retreated to German North Friesland where they founded a legendary rural commune. In 1985, the band that, in musical terms at least, was probably the most influential German-speaking rock group, was obliged to disband for financial reasons. But what's happening nowadays on the German music scene? Are there any musical or political heirs to Ton Steine Scherben?
