The pioneer’s spirit, which demands unselfish heroic deeds from young children, is undergone by Arsenov with two forms of playful criticism: On the one hand there is the satirical tone of his musical comedy (the music comes from the great Soviet film composer Michail Tariverdiev), in which the chorus of adults praises the “boys”, and a woman always has to sing "There was also a girl in it!" And on the other hand is the real gravity of Andrey’s moral conflict, who rescues his friend Gulka from drowning only for self-display, and then can’t cope with the heroic worshiping of his person.
