Dramatist Hugo von Hofmannsthal, composer Richard Strauss and director Robert Wiene teamed up to bring the eponymous opera to cinema screens. Baron Ochs von Lerchenau, Sophie Faninal, count Oktavian, the fieldmarshall and his wife are in the focus of love’s trials and tribulations. Carmen Cartellieri’s devious character Annina keeps everyone in sight and can’t get enough of gossip and tittle-tattle at court. (Kristina Höch)
