“Images of nature” are anything but precise impartial recordings of the visible world, they are impressions. Nimble trams, pleasure steamers and mountain trains are used as a vehicle for the exploration of depth, with lots of panoramas and a certain sense of movement. This genre was primarily the domain of the Count Sascha Kolowrat’s ­pioneering company, which dedicated a large portion of its output to this form. This selection presents the most beautiful of these cinematic impressions, and the formally closely related examples of First World War film propaganda show one of the central roots of the cinematic aesthetics of Austrian film.
