For his fourteenth film, acclaimed south Korean auteur Hong Sangsoo offers sly variations on some of his favorite themes: the tenuous nature of male-female relationships, the foibles of the Korean male and, of course, the dangers of too much soju. For the first time, a Hong film takes a female point of view as Haewon, an indecisive young woman who is rather half-heartedly trying to be an actress, narrates her own story of questionable choices and romantic entanglements. There has always been humor in Hong’s films, but here, as in his last film IN ANOTHER COUNTRY, his newly relaxed approach to the material allows that aspect to move center stage, albeit in a very offhanded way that only underscores the bittersweet nature of Haewon’s misguided attempts at maintaining a meaningful relationship.
