Noticieros: Programm 1962-63
On June 6, 1962, Santiago Álvarez takes over management of the Noticiero. The Chinese lantern, symbol of the literacy campaign, will be the new logo of the program from now on. With the Chinese lantern on their backs, 100,000 youngsters of the literacy brigade return to Havana after having spent a year in the remotest parts of the country teaching people how to read. The tension at the military base of Guantánamo escalates. UN Secretary General U Thant visits Cuba to discuss the international crisis that has been caused by the US blockade of the country. The October crisis breaks out: Fidel Castro gives a heroic speech before the Cuban people. After the end of the crisis, life in Cuba takes its usual course again: star dancer Alicia Alonso solemnly closes the Women’s Congress in Havana. Castro goes hunting with Nikita Khrushchev in the USSR. Cuba mourns the loss of its biggest folk idol, the singer Benny Moré.
